3. Laufenburg to Koblenz

Embed this item to access it offline
The Rhine Valley narrows to Laufenburg, offering a first half of a stopover in the shade between the mountains and the intrepid river and a second half in a more open agricultural countryside.
Last stop along the Rhine before meeting him further east at the end of Lake Constance in about ten days. The atmosphere is contrasted according to the types of paths: EuroVélo N°6 bike path / pedestrians, shaded paths by the water or gravel roads along a nuclear power plant. But still a constant since Basel, the presence of many blockhouses, remnants of the protection of Swiss neutrality during the Second World War.

The chapel of Loreto is an interesting typological replica of the Casa Santa (Holy House) of the Italian pilgrimage site of Loreto. It was built in 1672 by the von Roll family and houses the family crypt under the choir. Since 1963 it has been a listed building by decision of the Aargau Government Council.

Description

Behind the church, at the end of the Herrengasse, take the successive stairs in the ramparts and in the Marktplatz to go down to the edge of the Rhine. After the swimming pool and a horse riding centre, the "Wanderweg" trail leaves the city for the countryside:

  1. The track passes under a road bridge, gradually approaching a busy road and the railway line which will be bordered until the village of Rheinsulz.

  2. When you arrive on a paved road leading to the village (tower remains), turn right, pass two tunnels under the main road and railway and immediately turn left onto Weihermattstrasse to follow the road and railway on the other side, staying level (at this level to reach Etzgen, it is also possible to follow route 60 which goes away from the railway up through the forest). At the exit of the forest marking the entrance to the village of Etzgen, the track joins the road that passes under the railway track with a tunnel.

  3. Turn left and carefully cross this tunnel to reach the track that once again runs along the road and railway on the other side to the village of Schwaderloch.

  4. When you arrive on a paved road (Rheingasse) at a level crossing, turn left to follow the Rhine loop in the countryside away from the railway and road that crosses this meander. The track joins the railway line near the Leibstadt industrial area. After this area, locate a passage under the railway track at the level of a small island: two possibilities are offered at this level, continue on the shore or turn away to visit the Loreto chapel (recommended) by crossing the railway and reaching Unterbernaustrasse. Turn left on this street and then take the second street on the left (Kemmerstrasse) which gives access to the chapel and then go down towards the Rhine again under the railway line at a dam. At the end of the tunnel, follow the path along the track to find the route.

  5. After the Leibstadt nuclear power plant, the track follows the Rhine loop to the bridge over the Aare River, a tributary of the Rhine. Reach Rheintalstrasse 7 by turning right into the group of houses before the bridge. Cross the Aare by a bicycle / pedestrian bridge to the right of the road bridge.

  6. At the exit of the bridge, continue towards the railway depot and turn left then right (pedestrian crossings) to reach the pavement along the railway track. Take the underground passage under the railway track 40m away. Follow the Gütschhalde until you reach the first alley on the right, which crosses the park and a railway line before reaching the church, which is visible from its modern bell tower.
