In spite of the change of department from the Meuse to the Vosges, the landscapes of cereal fields and forests follow one another.
A linking stage between the historical heritage of Gondrecourt-le-Château and the city of Joan of Arc. A visit to Joan of Arc's house with the adjoining museum is a must, as well as the church of Domrémy.

    Gondrecourt-le-Château

The name Gondri-curtis (Gondrecourt) appears in a Bull of Pope Leo IX in 1051. Tradition tells that a man named Gondouin, Lord of Meuse who was the father of Bodon leudin, Bishop of Toul and Saint Salaberge, founded the town on his lands. Saint Walbert, the third abbot of Luxeuil, exhorted this family to leave the world for a claustrophobic life. This is what Bodon Leudin and his sister Saint Salaberge did by founding a monastery in Laon.
This land was bitterly disputed between the Dukes of Lorraine, the Counts of Bar and the Dukes of Burgundy, not to mention the banditry. Destructions and reconstructions followed one another over the centuries and the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin did not escape these warlike vicissitudes.
Today there remains a tower in the upper town which faces the church on the small hill on the left bank of the Ornain.
