Andelys Hospital
The origin of the Hospital Santiago is very old, dating back to around 1225, when the Hotel Dieu Saint-Jacques was founded to welcome poor pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. At that time it was run by a prior.
In 1366, a charter mentions that the Hôtel Dieu is a royal foundation. It no longer welcomed only the pilgrims to Santiago but also the destitute and infirm sick.
The administration of the priors ended in 1637 when the last of them, Monsieur François de Gonnetz resigned from his benefit in the hands of the Count of Gisors, in favour of Jeanne de Corbinelli, hospital nun of the Hôtel-Dieu de Pontoise, in return for the payment of 400 pounds of life annuity.
In 1796, the administration of the Hôtel-Dieu passed into the hands of a commission of 5 members delegated by the Municipal Council of Andelys. Until 1945, the service was provided by religious.
From this date, the hospice of the Andelys is staffed by lay people. In 1964, the hospital is classified as a historical monument. - Tourist
