This stage begins with the crossing of the historic town of Bingen, a flat landscape accompanies you with the vineyards on the hills on the right bank of the Rhine. The Rhine seems slower and deposits alluvium to form islands. Since Roman times harbours have been built for fishing, exporting wine and importing timber. The Shrine of Isis and Mater Magna in Mainz
The sanctuary of Isis and Mater Magna is a place of worship of the Roman Mogontiacum (Mainz) which was active between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. The archaeological remains of this site were uncovered and excavated at the end of 1999 during work on the so-called "Römerpassage" shopping mall in downtown Mainz.
The Roman presence in Mainz, which was to last almost five centuries, began in 13-12 BC with the construction of a Roman camp. The rapid growth of Canabæ, a colonized civil vicus between the camp and the Rhine, soon led to the construction of Roman public buildings, such as the baths, the theatre, administrative buildings, and the temple, especially during the reign of the Flavians. It was at this time that the foundations of the temple of Isis and Mater Magna were laid.
