The gate of the old city in Speyer

The lower part of the tower was built between 1230 and 1250; the upper floor of the tower was added between 1512 and 1514.
The tower survived the destruction of the town in 1689 during the War of the Palatinate Succession and is one of the few remains of the medieval town fortifications.
In 1773, a watermill stood next to the Altpörtel, directly on the Speyerbach. The brook here turns north and flows under the houses into the Korngasse.

The old Jewish quarter in Speyer

The Judenhof Speyer was the central part of the medieval Jewish quarter of Speyer and included the synagogue, including the women's school, the synagogue courtyard and the yeshiva as well as the oldest preserved mikvah in Central Europe, the ritual immersion bath for Jews. The synagogue was built around 1100, the women's school was added a little later. The mikvah also dates from this period. The site was no longer used after 1534 and fell into ruin. The new synagogue in Speyer in Maximilianstraße, built in 1837, was destroyed during the pogroms of November 1938.

    Polder de Mechtersheim

The Mechtersheim polder south of Speyer is part of the transnational concept of flood protection on the Upper Rhine, to which Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse and France have jointly committed themselves within the framework of the contractually agreed "200-year flood protection".The principle is to create natural reservoirs fed by sluice gates, in the course of the Rhine during floods.
