    Leslie Castle

    A short walk through the pretty village of Glaslough, past a classical monument to Charles Powell Leslie (1821-71), leads to two pavilions that mark the entrance to the Castle Leslie estate. Castle Leslie is considered a masterpiece by Belfast-based architect William Henry Lynn (1829-1915). It now houses a 4-star luxury hotel.

    Tynan Abbey

    Tynan Abbey in Northern Ireland, was a large romantic neo-Gothic country house built around 1750 (later renovated around 1815) and situated outside the village of Tynan. It was the home of the Stronge family until 1981, when it burned down; its ruins were demolished in 1998, having stood for 249 years.

    Navan Fort

    Navan Fort is thought to have been built by Queen Macha around 300 BC. It is a cairn on which a wooden building was erected, where the great kings of Ulster once met. A veritable capital at the time, its influence came to an end after a fire, to the benefit of the Hill of Tara. 
    The site includes a Visitor Centre. Here you can find out all about the history of the hill and admire artefacts found there.

    Navan Centre

    Navan Centre is a place where myth and reality meet. It is one of Ireland's most famous and important archaeological sites, the legendary Emain Macha. Legends say that Macha, the ancient goddess of war and fertility, marked the land with her pin and traced the famous outline of this sacred stronghold of the hero Cu Chulainn, home to the famous Knights of the Red Branch and the Ulster Tale Cycle.

Description

Enter the park and walk past the château, which is now a hotel. Follow the tree-lined path to the park exit marked by an open gate:
  1. Turn right onto the R185, which runs alongside the wall of the château grounds. At the end of the wall, the border is marked only by a change of unit sign (km/h and miles/h). Continue for 6 km in a north-easterly direction. At the end of the road, cross the River Blackwater. The road ends with a right turn before crossing a stone bridge.
  2. Continue across the junction onto Abbey Road to Tynan Abbey. In the village, turn left towards the church, then right onto the main road. At the exit after the pharmacy, continue left on the main road for 4km, crossing 2 streams.
  3. Turn left towards Killylea, cross the River Ballynameta and reach the hamlet of Killylea. At the church, turn right to join a larger road via a tarmac and grass path.
  4. Turn opposite Tonnagh Road and continue for 3.5km, ignoring the minor junctions until you reach the signposted entrance to Navan Park.
  5. Turn right to reach the finish of the stage.
