After climbing and steep descent of the Septimer pass, flat hike at the bottom of the valley at the side of the Mera river and surrounded by perched villages.
Border crossing between Switzerland and Italy, which also marks a cultural change between the canton of Graubünden and the province of Sondrio. A very small transition step to enjoy Switzerland or discover Italy.

Description

Join the cycle path that follows the river Mera to Chiavenna:
  1. After the Lovero torrent which marks the border, continue along the Via Dogana until you reach the car park marking the junction with the state road or Strada Statale SS37. Turn left and follow the path that crosses the state road, descends towards the river Mera and then follows the right bank until you reach the Ponte della Vigna. Cross the bridge and then follow the left bank of the Mera along the San Barnaba path, which climbs through the forest and then descends to cross the Mera again and reach the Santa Croce Ponteggio cycle path.

  2. Cross the Mera to return on the right bank to the next footbridge.

  3. Cross the Mera to the left bank. Continue straight on the cycle path until you reach the footbridge at the cemetery of the village of Prosto. Cross the Mera again.

  4. Take the road bridge on the left and turn right at the church opposite the bridge. Following this bank, reach Chiavenna via Maurizio Quadrio. Turn left into via don Giovanni Battista Picchi to reach the Basilica of San Lorenzo.
