The floods and the sometimes violent violence of the Rhine have led successive peoples to take refuge and build at the foot of the mountains, whose ascent reveals all this history through the city and its magnificent sites.
Second stop in Austria in a varied landscape and in the middle of a heritage steeped in history that dates back to Antiquity for this great fertile valley, a natural communication route very early populated.

Description

From the church (Schlossplatz), pass in front of Palast Hohenems (Kaiser-Franz-Joseph Strasse), cross the Emsbach stream and join the main road Bahnhofstrasse :

  1. Continue on the left sidewalk of this street until you reach the exit of the city marked by a factory (right) and a chapel (left). Turn left to exit the road and follow the bottom of the cliff. Back on the road at a roundabout, continue left and take the first street on the left (Römerweg with signposts).

  2. Follow this street and, shortly before its end, turn left (Am Hof) through the forest. Cross this district of Götzis towards the swimming pool and turn left at the end of the car park onto the path (Orflaweg) which leads up the stream (Emmebach) through the gorges. At the exit of these first gorges, leave the Emmebach which goes east to continue in the axis with the Mitzgebach stream. After a clearing, the path climbs into a second series of gorges and then a third before reaching a road at an altitude of 611m.

  3. Turn right on this road until you reach the village of Klaus. At Sank Agnes Church, turn left onto the main road (Walgaustrasse), cross the Klausbach stream and continue this road until you reach a sharp turn to the east. Continue in the axis by turning right into a marked bicycle / pedestrian track.

  4. Cross the Treietstrasse and continue opposite on Wiesenstrasse to the end of the left field. Turn left onto the path that crosses the stream (Ratzbach), runs along its left bank and reaches sports facilities bypassed by the right (Nidiga). At the crossroads with an important road, turn right (Treietstrasse) then left after the nursery (Haltestelleweg and Alemannstrasse). Join the railway line on the right by the Oberer Bahneg. Follow the railway line to the bridge over the Frutz River. Turn left to reach a footbridge on the river which is crossed and followed on the left on the other side until the road bridge.

  5. At the bridge, turn right onto the main street (Stiegstrasse), followed to the city centre. In a sharp right-hand bend, the route turns left (Ringstrasse) then right (Liebfrauenberg) to go up to the basilica of Rankweil. Find the main street at the foot of the basilica by Thomas Lehrer Weg and Klostergässele. Continue on this important road (Sigmund Nachbaur Strasse and Churer Strasse) until the last street on the left before the railway (Loger). Take this street that joins the railway line further on. Follow the railway line on one side and then on the other (Tafernstrasse) until you reach the motorway. At this level, turn left, drive along the highway and pass under the railway and highway before the tunnels to climb into the forest under the cliffs. The path leads to a paved road next to Amberg Castle.

  6. From here, it is possible to reach the accommodation in Levis (youth hostel) directly or to continue on the mountainside to the historic centre of Feldkirch via Göfiser Strasse. Drive around the castle from the south (Schlosssteig and Burgstrasse) to reach the Neustadt, which brings you to your destination (Domplatz).
